Registered or unregistered: the one thing to check

Migration agent, immigration agent, visa consultant: in Australia they all describe the same regulated role. What matters is whether the person is registered. If somebody is charging you for immigration assistance in Australia and cannot give you a MARN or a legal practising certificate, walk away.

Professional fees for an application depend on the visa type and complexity, are separate from the Department of Home Affairs visa charge, and are set out in a written fee agreement before any work starts.
No. No agent or lawyer can guarantee a visa outcome, and guaranteeing one breaches the Code of Conduct for registered migration agents. Only the Department of Home Affairs decides applications. Anyone guaranteeing approval is either unregistered or breaching their obligations.
Search the agent's name or MARN on the public register at mara.gov.au. The register shows registration status and any disciplinary history. Check it before you pay anyone or hand over documents.
Most Administrative Review Tribunal applications have to be lodged within 21 days of the refusal notice, and that deadline cannot be extended. Some decisions have shorter windows. A section 501 character cancellation usually allows 28 days to request revocation. Check the date on your own notice, because the clock runs from that document.
